The Government Digital Service is recruiting for a head of cybersecurity to help embed security into its services and lead incident response.
The post, which is based at GDS headquarters in London’s Whitechapel, comes with a salary of up to £70,700. One of the key responsibilities of the role is to make sure that “the portfolio of programmes and products” delivered by GDS meet all relevant Cabinet Office security standards.
The successful candidate will also be expected to work throughout Whitehall to help develop government cybersecurity policy, and “advocate and effectively explain cybersecurity standards and practices” to senior management at GDS and across government more widely. The job will also entail leading “a community of cybersecurity experts” spread across a number of teams focused on individual products throughout GDS.
Applicants must possess “a background in software development or operations, and good knowledge of security architecture and design”, GDS said.

The head of cybersecurity will report to the organisation’s deputy director of technology and operations. Applications are open until 14 January, with interviews taking place during the week commencing 22 January.
GDS said: “[The successful candidate] will be a critical part of a small, but growing, security team within the Government Digital Service, who help minimise security and resilience risk in our portfolio of products and services, to ensure every one of them remains secure and resilient.”
It added: “GDS Security is the team that enables security engineering, security operations, security architecture and incident response, and you will work closely with colleagues to understand these activities, and provide support and advice as needed.”
