The Royal Statistical Society has opened entries for its 2025 Award for Statistical Excellence in Trustworthiness, Quality and Value.
Now in its sixth year, the prize is run in partnership with Civil Service World and the Office for Statistics Regulation.
It recognises excellence in the voluntary application of the “pillars” of trustworthiness, quality and value (TQV) that stand at the heart of the OSR’s Code of Practice for Statistics.
The code applies to everyone in an organisation producing official statistics. Voluntary application, however, is where a producer of data, statistics and analysis, inside or outside government, commits to TQV in the way it produces and releases information even if it is not classified as official statistics.
Announcing the commencement of nominations for the 2025 prize, Baroness Onora O’Neill, a philosopher whose thoughts on the importance of trustworthiness over trust inspired the award, said: “This award continues to benefit statistics and data at large, helping to support the public and positively influence our ability for informed societal debate.”
Last year’s winner, the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority, was recognised for launching a fertility data dashboard, which is believed to be the first of its kind.
Judges also highly commended the UK Health Security Agency for its data dashboard on respiratory viruses, which built on the success of the Covid-19 dashboard.
RSS chief exec Dr Sarah Cumbers said: ‘Trustworthiness, quality, and value are all about putting users first in the production of statistics and it has been fantastic to highlight, over the years, the breadth of organisations committing to these principles through this award.”
Ed Humpherson, director general for regulation at the OSR, added: ‘This award is an important annual milestone in our activities to encourage wider use and application of the Code of Practice in areas beyond official statistics, that continually pushes the merits and benefits of TQV for a growing community committed to serving their user audiences.’
The deadline for entries is midnight on Tuesday 6 May. Entrants need to demonstrate how they meet each of the following criteria:
- A stated commitment to applying TQV in producing and sharing their information
- Examples of how TQV have been applied to innovate or improve their information or processes
- A demonstration of how public value has been enhanced by their application of the pillars.
