New appointments in the civil service, UK politics, and public affairs, via the Dods People team

UK government

  • Cabinet Office: Committee on Standards in Public Life – Lady Arden of Heswall DBE appointed as an Independent Member from 13 February. 
  • Department for Culture, Media and Sport – Brett Gosper, Dan Jones, Lisa O’Keefe, Hope Powell, Jane Purdon and Ian Wright appointed to advise Karen Carney on the next stage of review of women's football. 
  • Department for Energy Security and Net Zero: Coal Authority Board – Bev Smith appointed as non-executive director from April. 
  • Department for Work and Pensions – Mary Starks appointed to lead a review of the Pensions Regulator – the report is due in May.  Money and Pensions Service – Sara Weller CBE appointed as chair for five years from 29 March until 28 March 2028; she has served as a non-executive board member since September 2022. 

House of Commons 

  • Government Whips Office – Stuart Anderson appointed as a government whip; Ruth Edwards appointed as an assistant government whip (Edwards had previously been announced as a government whip last week).  

Political parties

Scottish National Party 

  • Nicola Sturgeon MSP to stand down as leader. A new leader will be announced on 27 March. Nominations for the post have opened and will close at noon on 24 February. 

Devolved administrations

Scottish Government 

  • Nicola Sturgeon to stand down as first minister. 

Welsh Government 

  • Welsh Language Commissioner’s Advisory Panel – Anne Davies and Nia Elias re-appointed as members for three years from 24 February.

  • Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council – Drew Mellor resigned as council leader. 
  • Lewisham Council – Jennifer Daothong appointed as acting chief executive from 4 March.
