Sir Mark Lyall-Grant is to replace Sir Kim Darroch as the prime minister’s national security adviser, it has been announced.
The current UK representative to the UN will take up the role in early September, when Darroch steps down after three and a half years in post.
Darroch has served as national security adviser since 2012, prior to which he held a number of senior roles in the diplomatic service.

As security adviser, Darroch has helped the government respond to international events including the rise of Islamist fighters in Syria and Iraq, and the Russian military intervention in Ukraine.
A spokesperson for Number 10 told CSW that Darroch would be moving on to another senior diplomatic post in due course, but declined to say what that role would be.
