The government will appoint a new chair of the inquiry into child sex abuse by the end of January, Theresa May has told MPs.
The home secretary said she had confirmed to panel members that she would make a decision "on the right model for the inquiry and the chairman by the end of January".
But her opposite number Yvette Cooper claimed the Government was "letting down" victims
The independent inquiry, set up to investigate the way public institutions dealt with historical claims of sexual abuse, has suffered a number of setbacks including the loss of two chairpeople over concerns about conflicts of interest.
A statement posted on the inquiry's website yesterday confirmed that its panel had "made the difficult choice to delay all scheduled listening meetings" until Ms May had made a decision on its future.
