The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs is looking to hire an array of technology and data specialists to oversee a “programme of digital change”.
The department is advertising 24 vacant posts covering three core disciplines: software development; data; and user research.
“Together we will launch an audience-informed programme of digital change across the organisation, revolutionising how people in the UK understand, interact with and manage our natural environment,” the job advert said.

“The department… requires a multitude of skill sets across the UK,” Defra said. It is seeking software developers with skills in programming languages such as C++ or Python and experience in providing data reporting services.
The department is beefing up its digital capacity after hiring its first permanent chief digital officer, Myra Hunt, in July last year. The job description for that role said the CDO would be expected to “radically transform” how the department interacts with businesses and customers and create a culture that is “orientated toward tangible delivery of outcomes”.
Defra’s website now says it is in a “period of exciting change, embracing digital services as a platform for continued transformation”.
“With new [digital] services and products in place, we will be able to better protect against environmental hazards, with more precise location data and more timely, targeted communication,” it says.
The annual salaries on offer range from £28,320 to £65,080, and the jobs will be based across Defra offices in Bristol, Reading, Warrington, and York.
Among the roles on offer are openings for prospective user researchers, who require “a successful track record of business analysis or user research in a similarly diverse environment”.
Applications are open until 15 October.
