With the end of 2017 fast approaching, we asked the UK's top civil servants to look back at the year, outline their goals for 2018 – and tell us what they cannot do Christmas without

What are you most proud of achieving in 2017?

I’m really pleased that despite the wider uncertainties facing government, we’ve continued to deliver in DfT. Achieving royal assent for our hybrid bill means Phase 1 of HS2, to Birmingham, is now under construction. Despite some last minute glitches, our new Intercity Express trains started running on the East Coast Main Line – the culmination of 10 years of work.

Working with the Civil Aviation Authority we led the UK’s biggest peacetime repatriation – returning over 100,000 Monarch passengers to the UK – a fantastic achievement.

However, the thing I’m most proud of is our progress on diversity and inclusion. Historically, DfT hasn’t always been a frontrunner. But this year, thanks to the fantastic work of our staff networks, we have been named as one of The Times Top 50 employers for women and one of the UK’s best employers for race. And I’m delighted to have appointed the first ever DG jobshare, Polly Payne and Ruth Hannant, who will be great role models for the transport sector.

What was your most difficult decision in 2017?

As a new permanent secretary I immediately faced the challenge of recruiting for three of my five director general roles. That was a huge amount of churn in my leadership team, and some very big gaps to fill. But I’m excited about the team we’ve assembled and looking forward to working together in 2018.

What are your department’s top priorities in the year ahead?

It's going to be another big year of delivery for DfT. Concluding the Crossrail project and launching the Elizabeth Line across London should be really exciting. Another priority will be publishing final proposals for expansion at Heathrow. Brexit will continue be a huge issue for DfT. And I’m really excited about our work on the future of mobility, taking advantage of the rapid changes in technology, and what this means for transport.

For you, no Christmas holiday is complete without...

A long walk along the South Downs on Boxing Day. I’m lucky enough to have the South Downs Way right on my doorstep, with great views to the Isle of Wight. It’s a great way to work off Christmas lunch and there’s always a pub at the end to look forward to!
