Directors do some of the most interesting and challenging work in the civil service. Here, Janet Hughes, director of farming reforms at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, explains what it takes to do her job
What does your role involve?
I lead a wonderful team who are, with our delivery partners and stakeholders, taking England out of the Common Agricultural Policy, phasing out farming subsidies and instead investing the money to support food production and productivity, as well as improvements to the environment, climate and animal health and welfare.

The serenity to accept the things you cannot change, courage to change the things you can, and the wisdom to know the difference.
