A civil servant who worked for the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has been found guilty of killing his three-week-old son.
Kadees Mohammed, of Dovey Road, Sparkhill, Birmingham, was convicted of manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility over the October 2022 death of his infant son Ibrahim.
Jurors at Birmingham Crown Court found Mohammed not guilty of Ibrahim's murder. They also convicted Mohammed of wounding two others – his wife and his mother – at the family home on the day of the tragedy.
The trial heard that 31-year-old Mohammed had been a "caring and loving father" but had begun acting "out of character" and that steps to assess his mental health were instigated.
Jurors heard Mohammed had been struggling with conflict between his sexuality and his religion.
The court was told that Mohammed had gone to a local hospital to be assessed by a mental health crisis team in the hours before he fatally attacked his son, but left after being told he faced a lengthy wait to be seen. He was subsequently diagnosed with schizophrenia.
Mohammed was remanded into a secure mental health facility ahead of sentencing next month.
West Midlands Police issued a statement from Ibrahim's mother following yesterday's guilty verdicts.
"My beautiful Ibrahim, I am missing you a lot today," she said. "My love for you is eternal. I know that you are no longer with me but your precious belongings are so dear to me.
"I imagine how life would have been with you by my side. I would have watched you grow, laughed with you and wiped your tears.
"You will remain in my memories for the rest of my life like a beautiful flower. Love from your mum."
