G-Cloud buyers slow with wallets

The civil servant leading the G-Cloud purchasing programme has admitted that more could be done to promote the benefits of the facility to officials across government.

Speaking at a session at Civil Service Live, Eleanor Stewart, engagement manager of the G-Cloud Programme, said that G-Cloud will enable government departments to avoid long, inflexible ICT contracts.But she admitted that the service has not been widely taken up yet, and that levels of awareness about the potential benefits are currently low.

“We are in a reasonably new project,” she said. “We are aware we haven’t got across the message to the buyers. There is a team of five trying to drive this across the civil service.”

Bill McCluggage, the former deputy CIO now working for EMC Computer Systems (UK), said that “the dynamism is clearly there, although the demand side needs to be fit for purpose as well as the supply side.”
