Solicitors Deighton Pierce Glynn, representing clients of an East London refugee charity, threatened to sue the government under the 2010 Equality Act’s public sector equality duty. This, said the firm, “requires the government to have due regard to the need to eliminate discrimination and harassment based on race and religion, as well as to foster good relations between people from different racial and religious groups.”

The Home Office responded by promising to consult with local communities if it plans such campaigns in future.

The public sector equality duty is being reviewed, under the auspices of a Tory-dominated steering group.
