Dame Meg Hillier has been elected as the new chair of the Liaison Committee.

Hillier, who chairs the Treasury Committee and until recently led the Public Accounts Committee for almost a decade, was picked by fellow members of the committee at its first meeting in this parliament.

The Labour MP said: “I am privileged and honoured to chair the Liaison Committee. There is important work to be done to make sure the select committee corridor holds the government to account.

“The Liaison Committee has a key role in supporting select committees to do their job as effectively as possible.”

In a wide-ranging interview with CSW this summer, the Hackney South and Shoreditch MP gave advice on new ministers getting the most out of civil servants and warned that governments should not fall into the trap of trying to do too much.

The Liaison Committee is parliament’s "supercommittee", made up of the chairs of the House of Commons' select committees.

Thirty-one select committee chairs are eligible to take part in the committee’s work, ranging across departmental committees such as Defence and Education; cross-cutting committees such as Environmental Audit and Public Accounts; and those relating to House of Commons business, such as Procedure and Standards.

It is also the only committee with the power to question the prime minister and it has invited Keir Starmer to give evidence on 19 December.

Before this summer’s election, the committee was chaired by Sir Bernard Jenkin.
