The survey, conducted in conjunction with IT company Software AG, gathered the views of 731 civil servants on the question: “When you are asked to do more with less, how important are the following to achieving this within budgetary constraints?” In response, 40 per cent said that “replacing IT systems with more efficient ones” is “important” and 40 per cent said it is “very important.”

Meanwhile, 86 per cent highlighted “changing how you/your team work,” with 34 per cent citing it as “very important” and 52 per cent as “important”.

Toby Hart from Software AG said: “Government has been saving money by doing all the things that have been easiest to do: they’ve pressed the suppliers, reduced contracts, moved people around, reduced headcounts... To drive the kind of savings that are still required, with the scale of budget cuts people are seeing, people will have to change how they work.”
