The Crown Commercial Service has created a new role of CCS chief commercial officer as part of its senior leadership team and is offering nearly £194,000 a year for the right candidate.
According to the candidate pack for the job, the CCS chief commercial officer will lead a new directorate and deputise for CCS chief executive Simon Tse. The role is distinct from the post of government chief commercial officer, currently held by Gareth Rhys Williams.
The new role will be based within the CCS commercial team and tasked with delivering departmental objectives. However it will “sit” within the Government Commercial Organisation – established to be the single employer of senior commercial talent across government.
CCS chief exec Tse said the service had “come a long way” since its formation in 2014 and that the new role was being created out of a need to extend its reach and expand his leadership team.
“The successful candidate will report to me and deputise for me as required. They will have responsibility for the management of experienced and expert category directors and be responsible for circa 420 staff,” he said.
Tse said the ideal candidate would be an experienced leader who was able to use their leadership skills and commercial experience to “consider full lifecycle management” of all CCS agreements, and ensure the service has the flexibility to respond to future challenges.
“The new CCS chief commercial officer will be responsible for ensuring that commercial activity across all our categories is consistent and achieves the maximum overall commercial benefit for our broad range of customers across the public sector,” he said.
“The successful candidate will have a proven delivery record, be commercially strong, a team player, and, importantly, a motivational, inspiring and determined leader with a proven record of delivery.”
The candidate pack said the new chief commercial officer would be responsible for leading the delivery of strategy and the policy development for CCS frameworks and commercial products. They will have responsibility for the leadership and management of four “expert category” directors as part of their team.
The advertisement for the role states the successful candidate can be based in Birmingham, Liverpool, Newport or Norwich. It adds that while the pay ceiling for the SCS Pay Band 2 role is £193,819, the floor is £160,000.
The successful applicant will be entitled to performance-related pay worth up to 20%.
Applications are open until 11.55pm on Thursday, 9 June.
