New appointments in the civil service, UK politics, and public affairs, via our colleagues on Dods People


Government departments

  • Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy: Nuclear Decommissioning Authority – Tom Smith appointed as Chair, replacing Stephen Henwood on 1st March; Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council – Mark Smith and Timothy Whitley appointed to the council.
  • Department for Communities and Local Government: Homes and Communities Agency – Nick Walkley named as the new Chief Executive and Accounting Officer.
  • Foreign and Commonwealth Office: Richard Lindsay has been appointed British High Commissioner to Brunei.
  • Department for Work and Pensions: Disability Confident Business Group -  Tim Fallowfield appointed as Chair.
  • Department for Education: Ofqual – Roger Taylor to become Chair.
  • Ministry of Justice: Nigel Newcome's tenure as Prisons and Probation Ombudsman extended.
  • Northern Ireland Office: Virginia McVea appointed as Chief Electoral Officer for Northern Ireland, replacing Graham Shields who is due to retire this month.

House of Lords

  • Lord Speaker's Committee on the Size of the House – Lord Burns appointed as Chair; Lord Beith, Baroness Browning, Baroness Crawley, Baroness Taylor of Bolton and Lord Wakeham appointed as member of this new committee.
  • European Union Committee – Lord Woolmer appointed as member.

House of Commons

  • Jamie Reed, Labour MP for Copeland, is to stand down as MP at the end of January.
  • Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Committee – John Stevenson replaced Adam Holloway as a member.
  • Work and Pensions Committee – Royston Smith replaced John Glen as a member.
  • Women and Equalities Committee – Philip Davies replaced Mims Davies as a member.
  • Finance Committee – Mark Menzies replaced Mark Garnier as a member.
  • Environmental Audit Committee – Scott Mann and Joan Ryan became members, and Margaret Greenwood stood down as a member.

Government Lords Reshuffle

  • Baroness Neville-Rolfe appointed as Commercial Secretary (Minister of State) at HM Treasury (previously Minister of State at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy).
  • Lord Henley appointed as a Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Work and Pensions, remaining in his current role as a Whip.
  • Lord O'Shaughnessy appointed as a Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department of Health and a Whip.
  • Lord Prior of Brampton appointed as a Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (previously a Parliamentary Under Secretary of State at the Department of Health).
  • Baroness Buscombe and Baroness Vere of Norbiton appointed as Whips.
  • Baroness Shields no longer Parliament Under Secretary of State as the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, remaining in the role at the Home Office and becomes Prime Minister's Special Representative on Internet Crime and Harms.
  • Baroness Chisholm of Owlpen no longer a Whip.

Parties

  • UK Independence Party: Tim Aker appointed as Key Seats Co-ordinator; Victoria Ayling appointed Heritage and Tourism Spokesperson
  • Welsh Green Party: Alice Hooker-Stroud re-elected as Leader; Grenville Ham and Pippa Bartolotti elected as Joint Deputy Leaders.

Local Authorities

  • Waverley Borough Council – Liz Townsend elected for Cranleigh West – Conservative hold.
  • Dover District Council – Gordon Cowan elected for Aylesham – Labour hold.
  • Eastleigh Borough Council – Ian Corben elected for Hedge End Wildern – Lib Dem hold.

Industry & Interest Groups

  • UK Athletics – Richard Bowker to succeed Ed Warner as Chair in January 2018.
  • Sellafield Ltd – Jamie Reed to become Head of Development and Community Relations.
