Paul Wilson has been appointed as interim chief inspector of probation, the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) announced today.

Wilson, who joined the probation service in 1972 and was chief executive of the London Probation Trust between 2009 and 2010, will serve as head of the probation inspectorate while the MoJ recruit a permanent inspector.

Wilson replaces Paul McDowell, who resigned earlier this month over criticism of his personal relationship with MoJ outsourcing bidder Sodexo-Nacro.

Speaking about his appointment, Wilson said: “I look forward to taking up the post, helping to ensure the independent inspection of probation services during a time of great change in the criminal justice system.”

Justice secretary Chris Grayling said: “After more than 40 years rising through the ranks of the probation service, Paul has the ideal knowledge and experience necessary for this role.

“I am confident that he will bring the leadership and drive necessary to steer the inspectorate and safeguard its independence while a permanent chief inspector is appointed."
