G-Cloud — the digital marketplace where public sector organisations and arm’s-length bodies can buy cloud-based services, like web hosting, site analytics or document collaboration tools — has seen £346m in sales to October 2014. Of this, £184m (just over 53%) went to SMEs.

The majority of the sales are attributed to central government, which made up over 79% of spend at £275m. Local government accounted for only 65 of spend at £20.8m.

Commenting on how G-Cloud is “levelling the playing field”  for SME suppliers of cloud services, the Cabinet Office said: “The service has come a long way in a short time and it is a standout success in our ongoing reforms to lower the barriers which have historically prevented small businesses from winning contracts.”
